JAHA KOO

Jaha Koo is a theatre-maker, composer, and video artist. Working across music, video, text, and robotic objects and performers, he explores new possibilities for contemporary performance while addressing questions surrounding the legacy of colonialism, cultural identity, migration and diaspora, and the relationship between technology and humanity.
His long-term project, the Hamartia Trilogy, consists of Lolling and Rolling (2015), Cuckoo (2017), and The History of Korean Western Theatre (2020). In 2024, he premiered Haribo Kimchi, a performance that explores cultural hybridity and belonging through food and diasporic experience. He is currently developing Born to be K to be POP together with scenographer and visual artist Eunkyung Jeong. The work will premiere at deSingel in Antwerp, Belgium, in June 2027.
Koo graduated from the Korea National University of Arts (BFA, 2011) and received an MA from DAS Theatre in Amsterdam (2016). He is currently an associate artist of LOD muziektheater, Theater Utrecht, Kunstencentrum Viernulvier, and CAMPO. In 2026, he received the International Ibsen Award (Norway) and the Hong Jin-Ki Creator Award (South Korea).
구자하는 공연예술 작가, 작곡가, 비디오 아티스트이다. 그는 음악, 영상, 텍스트, 로보틱 오브제와 퍼포머 등 다양한 매체를 활용해 동시대 공연예술의 새로운 가능성을 탐구하며, 식민주의의 유산, 문화적 정체성, 이주와 디아스포라, 기술과 인간의 관계 등 동시대 사회가 직면한 질문들을 다루어왔다.
그의 중장기 프로젝트 〈하마티아 3부작(Hamartia Trilogy)〉은 《롤링 앤 롤링(Lolling and Rolling)》(2015), 《쿠쿠(Cuckoo)》(2017), 《한국 연극의 역사(The History of Korean Western Theatre)》(2020)로 구성된다. 2024년 발표한 《하리보 김치(Haribo Kimchi)》는 음식과 디아스포라적 삶을 소재로 문화적 혼종성과 소속감의 문제를 다루며, 현재 국제 투어를 이어가고 있다. 현재 그는 시노그래퍼이자 시각예술가인 정은경과 함께 신작 《Born to be K to be POP》을 준비 중이며, 2027년 6월 벨기에 앤트워프의 드 싱겔(deSingel)에서 국제 초연될 예정이다.
구자하는 한국예술종합학교 연극원 연극학과를 졸업하고(BFA, 2011), 네덜란드 DAS Theatre에서 석사 과정을 마쳤다(MA, 2016). 현재 LOD muziektheater, Theater Utrecht, Kunstencentrum Viernulvier, CAMPO의 협력 예술가로 활동하고 있으며, 2026년 국제 입센상(International Ibsen Award)과 홍진기 창조인상을 수상했다.
